Regulatory Context
Many products marketed as “bioplastics” lack verified compostability and do not meet recognized regulatory standards. In response to market confusion, the State of California requires that any product sold with compostability or biodegradation claims must meet the ASTM D6400 specification. California regulations further restrict the use of the term “biodegradable” and require the term “compostable” to be used only for products that meet certified compostability standards.
